About This Industry

Enterprise software sold as a subscription service, covering business applications, workflow automation, HR, finance and creative tools. In the engine this aggregate blends seat-based incumbents with AI-native vendors whose products are priced by usage or outcome.

Representative public companies: Salesforce (CRM), ServiceNow (NOW), SAP (SAP), Adobe (ADBE), Workday (WDAY), Intuit (INTU), Atlassian (TEAM), HubSpot (HUBS). Named for context only, not as recommendations.

Where AI Adoption Stands Now

Research current as of September 12, 2026 · Adoption stage: Bifurcated

In 2026 AI moved from pilot to reported revenue across enterprise software, but the gains are uneven. Incumbents now disclose AI lines: ServiceNow AI crossed $1 billion in annual contract value in Q2, Salesforce Agentforce ARR passed $1.5 billion in August, and SAP included AI in more than 90% of its 50 largest deals. These remain small shares of total revenue. AI-native vendors are growing far faster: Anthropic's run-rate revenue crossed $47 billion in May 2026 and Harvey passed $400 million ARR by September. Pricing is shifting from seats to usage, with GitHub moving Copilot to AI credits on June 1, 2026. Software stocks lagged, with a major software ETF down 10.5% year to date in early July.

Future Uses to Watch

Projections grounded in what is happening now, not certainties. Each one names the signal that would confirm it.

Seat-based pricing gives way to hybrids of seats plus metered AI credits or agent work units 12-24 months
GitHub moved Copilot to token-based credits on June 1, 2026 and Salesforce reports Agentic Work Units as a usage metric.[7]
What would confirm it: Several large vendors report usage or credit revenue separately and guide on it.
Agent governance and control becomes its own paid software category 12-24 months
Microsoft sells Agent 365 at $15 per user and ServiceNow says AI Control Tower is expanding.[8]
What would confirm it: Vendors disclose revenue or customer counts for agent-governance products.
Agents embedded in business software resolve routine IT, HR and service requests end to end 24-36 months
ServiceNow reports agentic deployments up ninefold in nine months and Workday has more than 5,500 customers using its agents.[1]
What would confirm it: Customers publish audited rates of requests closed without human handling.
Vertical AI vendors displace horizontal tools inside specific professions 24-36 months
Harvey reached 80% of the top 100 law firms and more than 3,000 customers.[5]
What would confirm it: Similar penetration disclosed by vertical AI vendors in accounting, insurance or healthcare administration.

What to Watch Next

Arguments For

  • AI is now reported revenue at incumbents, with ServiceNow AI above $1 billion in annual contract value and Salesforce Agentforce ARR above $1.5 billion.
  • Enterprise buyers are still expanding with established vendors, as SAP includes AI in more than 90% of its 50 largest deals.
  • The AI-native half of the sector is compounding quickly, with Anthropic's run-rate revenue rising from about $9 billion at end of 2025 to more than $47 billion in May 2026.
  • Incumbents own customer data, permissions and workflows that agents depend on, which supports switching costs.
  • Usage pricing can let software revenue grow with work performed rather than with customer headcount.

Arguments Against

  • Per-seat revenue is at risk if agents reduce the number of human users, and software ETFs lagged the S&P 500 by more than 20 points year to date as of early July 2026.
  • Incumbent AI lines are still small against total revenue, such as Agentforce ARR of about $1.5 billion against Salesforce guidance of $46.1 to $46.4 billion.
  • Value may accrue to model makers and AI-native specialists rather than to the incumbents, and many of those winners are private.
  • AI branding does not ensure results: C3.ai's quarterly revenue fell to $52.4 million from $70.3 million a year earlier.
  • Usage-based models add inference costs and revenue volatility, which GitHub cited when it said its prior request-based pricing was no longer sustainable.

What's Actually Happening

Per-seat pricing model collapsing faster than modeled — now visible across ALL industries using SaaS tools (retail, healthcare, hospitality, insurance). AI agents replacing the human users that per-seat pricing bills for. Salesforce single-digit growth, stocks down 34-40%.

PLUS: EU sovereign procurement offensive (Euro Office March 2026 = free+sovereign+DOCX-compatible) creating a second front: Microsoft losing EU public sector AND facing AI agent disruption of per-seat model simultaneously. €23B sovereign cloud by 2027 directly cannibalizes Microsoft 365 government revenue. The cascade: SaaS repricing lowers tech stack costs for every other industry (positive cross-effect) while destroying SaaS vendor margins. v22: this aggregate node now decomposes into enterprise-saas-ai-native and enterprise-saas-legacy — see those entries for the split-thesis CCVR.
