GICS 3010: warehouse clubs, supercenters, discount and dollar stores, grocery chains and foodservice distributors, including Walmart, Costco, Target, Dollar General, Kroger and Sysco. Walmart, Costco and Target make up most of the group's market value. Margins are thin and store and warehouse workforces are very large, so small efficiency gains and shifts in how shoppers find products matter.
Representative public companies: Walmart (WMT), Costco Wholesale (COST), Target (TGT), Sysco (SYY), Kroger (KR), Dollar General (DG), Dollar Tree (DLTR), Albertsons Companies (ACI). Named for context only, not as recommendations.
Research current as of October 1, 2026 · Adoption stage: Scaling deployments
The three largest companies in this group have moved AI shopping tools from pilots into their main apps and websites. Walmart said in August 2026 that customers using its Sparky assistant spend 40% more per order and that Sparky users are up 70% from a year earlier; about half of its e-commerce fulfillment center volume is automated. Costco said AI-powered product recommendation carousels drove more than $470 million in e-commerce sales in a single quarter, and AI reordering in its pharmacies lifted in-stocks above 98%. Target reported AI-driven traffic up 2,000% in Q1 2026 and now sells through ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot. Among grocers and distributors, Albertsons says its Ask AI search lifts basket size 10% for users, Kroger is rolling an agentic shopping assistant out to all divisions during 2026, and about 90% of Sysco's sales consultants use its AI360 tool. Checkout inside chatbots has lagged: Walmart saw conversion three times lower in ChatGPT than on its own site. Pricing is the most constrained use: Maryland's ban on personalized food pricing took effect on October 1, 2026, and New York's governor has until December 31, 2026 to act on the One Fair Price Act.
| Company | What was deployed | Date |
|---|---|---|
| Walmart | Sparky, an AI shopping assistant across Walmart's website, app and stores, handling tasks such as meal planning and one-click recipe ingredient carts. Customers who use Sparky spend 40% more per order; Sparky users up 70% year over year. |
2026-08-25[1] |
| Walmart | Automated distribution and fulfillment centers, plus AI services built into its associate app. About 60% of stores receive some freight from automated distribution centers and about 50% of e-commerce fulfillment center volume is automated. |
2026-02-19[2] |
| Costco Wholesale | AI-powered personalized product recommendation carousels on its online store, alongside other personalization features on its digital sites. More than $470 million in e-commerce sales in a single quarter attributed to the carousels (company-reported on its fiscal Q2 2026 call); digitally enabled comparable sales up 22.6%. |
2026-03-17[3] |
| Target | Shopping experiences inside Google Search AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and ChatGPT, including multi-item baskets and Target Circle loyalty linking, built on the Universal Commerce Protocol. AI-driven traffic to Target up 2,000% in Q1 versus nearly 400% across retail sites. |
2026-06-18[4] |
| Albertsons Companies | Ask AI conversational search in all banner apps since September 2025, plus agentic shopping assistants on banner websites since December 2025 that plan meals and build carts. 10% increase in basket size for customers using Ask AI, per the CEO. |
2026-01-07[5] |
| Sysco | AI360, an AI selling and CRM tool that helps sales consultants answer customer questions, find selling opportunities and cut administrative work. About 90% of sales consultants use it; the company cited its highest new-account growth rate in the past 12 months, while calling outcome data early. |

Projections grounded in what is happening now, not certainties. Each one names the signal that would confirm it.
Staples retail is where AI makes the biggest players bigger. Walmart and Costco are 82% of the row. Walmart's AI shows up in side businesses first: advertising grew 38% and membership fees 17% in Q2 FY27, against 5.9% revenue growth, and Sparky users rose 70%. About 60% of its stores receive some freight from automated distribution centers, but that is capital: the FY27 capex guide went up to about 4% of sales and free cash flow fell. Costco reports measured gains (recommendation carousels drove over $470 million of online sales in one quarter).
The limits are thin margins, which pass savings to shoppers; pricing law, with Maryland's ban on personalized food pricing in force from October 1, 2026 and New York's decision due by year end; and Amazon, now delivering fresh groceries same-day in more than 2,300 U.S. cities. Kroger's November 2025 plan to close three robotic warehouses, with $2.6 billion of charges, shows automation bets can reverse.
The market already pays growth multiples for WMT and COST and did not reward this year's AI progress.
