Search engines, social networks and other online platforms that earn most of their revenue from advertising sold against user attention. Alphabet and Meta make up most of the group's value; the rest is smaller social, community, dating and Chinese internet platforms. Alphabet's Google Cloud business also sits inside this group because GICS classifies the whole company here.
Representative public companies: Alphabet (GOOGL), Meta Platforms (META), Reddit (RDDT), Pinterest (PINS), Snap (SNAP), Baidu (BIDU), Match Group (MTCH). Named for context only, not as recommendations.
Research current as of October 1, 2026 · Adoption stage: Widespread production
By mid-2026, AI runs the core products of the two companies that make up most of this group. In the quarter ended June 2026, Google Search & other revenue rose 17% to $63.3 billion while AI Mode in Search passed one billion monthly active users, and Google says AI Mode and AI Overviews add queries rather than replace them (company-reported). Meta's revenue rose 28% to $60.8 billion, with ad impressions up 14% and average price per ad up 12%; Meta says its AI ranking models lifted Facebook ad clicks 8.3% and conversions 15.7% (company-reported). Smaller members are adjusting: Pinterest announced in January 2026 that it would cut just under 15% of staff to move resources into AI, and Reddit's revenue rose 61% as it sells human discussion in what its CEO calls an increasingly automated web. The cost is cash and legal exposure. Alphabet's free cash flow was negative $5.9 billion in the June quarter on $44.9 billion of capital spending, Meta's was $784 million, Google faces court-ordered antitrust remedies in both its search and ad-tech cases, and a Los Angeles jury found Meta and YouTube liable in a first-of-its-kind social media addiction trial.
| Company | What was deployed | Date |
|---|---|---|
| Meta Platforms (META) | AI ad ranking and retrieval: the GEM ads ranking model with sequence learning and user-understanding models, a first generative model in the ads retrieval system, and the automated Advantage+ campaign suite Meta says the ranking changes generated an 8.3% increase in ad clicks and a 15.7% uplift in conversions on Facebook, and Advantage+ reached an annual revenue run-rate above $75 billion (company-reported on the Q2 2026 call) |
2026-07-29[1] |
| Alphabet (GOOGL) | AI Mode conversational search, merged with AI Overviews into one Search experience More than one billion monthly active users since AI Mode expanded globally in October 2025; Google says AI Mode drives an incremental increase in Search queries and that it cut the cost of AI Mode responses to the lowest level since launch (company-reported) |
2026-07-22[2] |
| Alphabet (GOOGL) | AI Max for Search campaigns, which use Gemini to match ads to longer and more detailed queries Out of beta and adopted by half a million advertisers; Google says advertisers using AI Max or Performance Max see on average 15% more conversions or value on Search at a similar return on ad spend (vendor-reported) |
2026-07-22[2] |
| Alphabet (GOOGL) | Gemini consumer assistant app 950 million monthly active users; Alphabet says its AI features are driving Search query growth (company-reported) |
2026-07-22[3] |
| Meta Platforms (META) | Workforce reduction of about 8,000 people, roughly 10% of staff, plus about 6,000 open roles closed; Meta's memo said the cuts help offset its other investments as it spends heavily on AI. Announced April 23, 2026, effective May 20 $1.18 billion of severance recognized in Q2 2026 for the May 2026 headcount reduction; headcount 75,472 at June 30, 2026, down 1% year over year (Meta Q2 2026 earnings release, company-reported) |
2026-04-23[4] |
| Pinterest (PINS) | Restructuring that cuts just under 15% of staff and moves resources to AI-focused roles and AI-powered products (disclosed in a January 27, 2026 securities filing) Pretax charges of $35 million to $45 million; about 5,200 employees at the end of 2025 (company confirmed to the Associated Press) |

Projections grounded in what is happening now, not certainties. Each one names the signal that would confirm it.
Search and social are where consumer AI reaches people, and so far it has made the incumbents bigger: Google Search revenue grew 17% in Q2 2026 while AI Mode passed one billion monthly users, and Meta grew ad prices 12% and impressions 14% on AI ranking. The threats are the cost and the courts, not the users.
Alphabet's free cash flow went negative in Q2 on $44.9B of capex and Meta's fell to $0.8B. Google operates under two six-year antitrust remedies, one of which forces it to share search data with rivals, and the DOJ is appealing the court's refusal to ban its default payments to Apple. Meta and YouTube lost a first-of-its-kind youth-addiction jury trial. AI assistants that sell ads (ChatGPT ads reportedly passed a $100M run rate in six weeks; Storyboard18, unconfirmed) are the first new rivals for search budgets in two decades: small today, and the reason this row is not scored as a pure winner.
A score of 1.00 = no change.
>1.00 means AI (net) boosts this industry's relative value.
<1.00 means AI (net) erodes it.
These are relative scores — how this industry's share of the economy shifts in relation to all 31 industries we track.
