About This Industry

Wireless carriers, cable and fiber broadband providers, and long-haul network operators that sell connectivity to consumers, businesses and data center operators.

Representative public companies: AT&T (T), Verizon Communications (VZ), T-Mobile US (TMUS), Comcast (CMCSA), Charter Communications (CHTR), Lumen Technologies (LUMN), Rogers Communications (RCI). Named for context only, not as recommendations.

Where AI Adoption Stands Now

Research current as of September 12, 2026 · Adoption stage: Scaling deployments

Carriers are using AI in two ways in 2026: to lower operating costs and to sell network capacity to AI builders. On its July 24, 2026 call, Verizon said AI models now fix network issues in minutes rather than hours, and it announced a Google dark fiber deal valued at over $1 billion, with more infrastructure deals expected by year-end. AT&T's broader cost-transformation program is on pace for $4 billion in annual savings by the end of 2028, and separately launched AI-generated call summaries in customer care in July 2026. T-Mobile is piloting NVIDIA GPU servers at the network edge with Nokia software. Revenue from AI is still small: Omdia estimates telco AI revenue at $4 billion globally in 2025, and carriers expect AI infrastructure revenue to contribute mainly from 2027.

Future Uses to Watch

Projections grounded in what is happening now, not certainties. Each one names the signal that would confirm it.

Wholesale fiber and capacity contracts with hyperscalers becoming a reported growth line 12-24 months
Verizon signed a dark fiber agreement with Google valued at over $1 billion and expects AI infrastructure revenue to start contributing in 2027.[1]
What would confirm it: Verizon announcing the additional infrastructure contracts it expects by year-end 2026, or carriers breaking out AI infrastructure revenue in 2027.
AI automation of customer service and digital sales reducing carrier operating costs 12-24 months
Verizon is targeting $5 billion in operating expense reductions by the end of 2026 and is deploying AI to automate customer service and digital sales functions.[6]
What would confirm it: Verizon or AT&T explicitly attributing a dollar amount of cost savings or headcount change to AI.
Telephone central offices converted into small data centers for AI inference near users 24-36 months
Verizon CEO Dan Schulman said on the Q2 2026 earnings call that the company is in the early stages of retrofitting many of its central offices into data centers for inference edge computing, with multiple partner conversations underway.[7]
What would confirm it: A signed partner or customer announced for Verizon central-office inference capacity.
Carriers renting spare AI computing capacity at cell sites to outside customers 3-5 years
Nokia and SoftBank demonstrated spare AI-RAN compute capacity running third-party AI tasks, and T-Mobile has tested AI and radio workloads on shared GPU servers.[8]
What would confirm it: A carrier reporting revenue from third-party AI workloads running on its radio network.
Premium-priced service levels for AI agent traffic, with stronger upload speeds and low latency 3-5 years
AT&T cited industry research that AI agents generate up to 450% more traffic per task than a human and projects about 9x enterprise traffic growth by 2035.[9]
What would confirm it: A major carrier launching a priced latency or uplink tier aimed at AI agent or device traffic.

What to Watch Next

Arguments For

  • Hyperscaler fiber contracts are turning into signed revenue: Verizon's dark fiber agreement with Google is valued at over $1 billion, and Verizon expects the initiative to contribute to revenue growth starting in 2027.
  • Cost programs are large: AT&T is on pace for $4 billion in annual cost savings by the end of 2028, and Verizon targets $5 billion in operating expense reductions by the end of 2026.
  • AI could raise traffic intensity: AT&T cited research that AI agents generate up to 450% more traffic per task than humans and projects about 9x enterprise traffic growth by 2035.
  • Operating AI is already showing in network metrics: Verizon's CFO said AI resolves 85% of network issues without manual intervention.
  • Fiber is becoming a scarcer, more valuable asset: Lumen plans to grow intercity fiber from 17 million miles at end-2025 to 47 million by end-2028.

Arguments Against

  • AI revenue is small relative to the industry: Omdia estimates telco AI revenue at $4 billion globally in 2025.
  • Headline contracts start small: RCR Wireless reports hyperscaler capacity deals can be framed at a ceiling of 400 wavelengths while the initial signed capacity covers about six.
  • Revenue grows slower than capacity: analyst Brian Washburn told RCR Wireless that the price per bit keeps going down, so revenue rises far more slowly than demand for capacity.
  • New satellite competition: SpaceX paid $19.6 billion for EchoStar spectrum and says Starlink will become a true mobile service, with next-generation satellites scheduled for 2027.
  • Capital intensity stays high: AT&T expects $23 billion to $24 billion of capital investment in 2026.

What's Actually Happening

Telcos are the pipe AI runs through but capture little of the AI value. Private 5G and network APIs are real adjacencies but require cultural transformation these companies struggle with.

Starlink + cloud convergence is the existential threat at 10yr. AI helps optimize networks internally but the capex treadmill never ends.
