There's a word for a belief so deep you don't know you hold it: doxa. Not dogma, which you can name and debate. Doxa is the water the fish doesn't know is wet.

Humanity has a doxa about labor. Researcher David Shapiro calls it the Assumption of the Indispensability of Labor (AIL): the unspoken belief that human effort is required for the world to function.

This isn't a modern idea. It predates capitalism, predates organized religion, predates written language. For all of human history — and all of proto-human history — human effort was irreplaceable. Individual humans might be fungible (one farmer is much like another), but humanity itself was non-fungible. Nothing else could do what we do.

Until now.

AI is the first technology that challenges the AIL doxa at its root. Not "machines that do some things better than humans" (we've had those since the lever). But machines that can sense, process, and act across the full range of cognitive tasks. The entire bundle — perception, reasoning, and output — in a single system.

And that's why AI fear feels different from every previous technology panic. Because it is different. It doesn't just threaten jobs. It threatens the assumption underneath all jobs.

Fifteen centuries of Judeo-Christian worldview established God as the Master and humans as laborers in service of a higher purpose. Idle hands do the Devil's work. Even as the West secularized, the structure survived — we just replaced God with Capitalism, the Church with the Corporation, and divine judgment with quarterly earnings. The Protestant work ethic became hustle culture. The measuring stick changed; the measuring didn't.

AI attacks this directly: your 14-hour biohacked productivity day is a rounding error compared to a server farm running the same cognitive tasks 24/7. If your worth is your output, and a machine out-outputs you by orders of magnitude, the math on your worth is devastating.

Eastern Framework
Your value is your struggle

In Eastern cultures, the process of labor carries moral weight independent of its results. India has tapas — the spiritual purification of worthy struggling. China has chīkǔ — "eating bitterness" as proof of loyalty and moral worth. Japan has ganbaru (tenacious effort as virtue) and gaman (enduring the unbearable with dignity). Your existence is defined by your roles in family and society. Under the Confucian tradition, you literally do not exist outside the roles you fulfill.

AI attacks this just as directly: machines can't suffer. If the moral value of work lies in the endurance, the sacrifice, the friction — and a machine does the same work without any of those — then the entire framework of dignified struggle becomes absurd.

This is the critical insight for investors: AI destroys both cultural worth-metrics simultaneously. Every previous technology threatened one or the other. The automobile threatened outputs (horse-based transport) but not the dignity of work itself. The assembly line threatened craft dignity but increased outputs. AI threatens both. In every culture. At the same time.

That's unprecedented in the 300,000-year history of Homo sapiens. And it explains why the fear response is so much more intense than the economic fundamentals would suggest.

The Internalized Panopticon

Here's the part that makes this personal, not just philosophical.

We don't just believe work defines us because someone told us to. We feel it. The cultural programming has been internalized so deeply that it operates automatically — what Shapiro calls the internalized panopticon.

In the West, God was omniscient. Even for people who never attended church, the structure persists: you should feel guilty when you're not productive. You should feel anxious about your output. Laziness is sinful — not because you believe in sin, but because the cultural doxa runs deeper than belief.

In the East, the collective gaze does the same work. Society watches. Family judges. The shame of unproductivity is as visceral as the Western guilt, just mediated through a different cultural lens.

This panopticon doesn't care whether you've read Shapiro or Nietzsche. It doesn't care whether you're religious or secular. It runs in your neurology. It's the reason you feel anxious on a Sunday afternoon even when your inbox is empty. It's the reason "What do you do?" is the first question Americans ask strangers.

The Mispricing

OK. Here's where this gets concrete for your portfolio.

Financial markets are efficient at pricing economic information. Unemployment data, GDP forecasts, productivity metrics, earnings estimates — all of this gets absorbed into prices quickly. Markets are very good at this.

Financial markets are terrible at pricing emotional information. Specifically, they're terrible at pricing the gap between how scared people feel and how bad things actually are.

When fear is proportional to economic reality, markets adjust accurately. When fear overshoots economic reality — because it's driven by identity, not income — the market creates a mispricing.

The Pattern In 600 years of technology panics — printing press, textile mills, electricity, automobiles, computers — the emotional fear response has always peaked 2–5 years before the technology's economic benefits fully materialized. During that window, sentiment is maximally negative but fundamentals are improving. Investors who sold into that window have never been right at the 10-year horizon. Not once in 600 years.

AI fear is deeper than any of those panics. It's ontological, not just economic. Which means the overshoot — the gap between fear and fundamentals — will be bigger.

The key insight: three of six major AI fears are overpriced by the market, and two are underpriced. The overpriced fears are all ontological (identity-threatening). The underpriced risks are both economic (concrete, measurable). Markets handle economic risk well. They handle identity risk terribly.

The Policy Overshoot

There's a second-order effect of ontological fear that investors are almost completely ignoring: regulatory overshoot.

When people fear unemployment, they demand retraining programs and safety nets. Proportionate responses to economic problems.

When people fear that their purpose as human beings is being taken away, they demand that the technology be stopped. Banned. Regulated into impotence. This is not proportionate. It's visceral.

The EU AI Act is the first example. Its scope goes far beyond economic risk management. It restricts AI applications that pose no measurable economic harm but that make people uncomfortable — because the discomfort is ontological, not rational. The regulatory framework treats the technology as inherently threatening to human dignity, not just to employment.

For investors, this means:

Companies framed as "taking purpose" (not just jobs) face existential brand risk. A company that automates factory work faces normal labor disruption backlash. A company that replaces creative, cognitive, or caregiving work faces a qualitatively different response — one that can't be managed with the standard corporate playbook of "reskilling programs and transition support."

The Reinstatement Problem

Every AI optimist has the same argument: technology always creates new jobs. The automobile destroyed the horse industry but created the auto industry. The computer destroyed the typing pool but created the information economy. AI will do the same.

MIT economist Daron Acemoglu, who literally wrote the textbook on labor economics (Why Nations Fail, Power and Progress), says this time might be different.

He tracks two competing forces across 200 years of economic data:

The displacement effect: technology eliminates existing tasks. Since the 1980s, this has accelerated.

The reinstatement effect: technology creates new tasks that require human skills. Since the 1980s, this has flatlined.

For every previous technology revolution, reinstatement eventually caught up. New industries absorbed displaced workers. New job categories emerged. But that mechanism required one condition: the new technology couldn't do the new tasks.

The automobile created driving jobs because cars couldn't drive themselves. Computers created programming jobs because computers couldn't program themselves.

If Acemoglu is right, the production function shifts from Y=f(K,L) to Y=f(K). Output becomes a function of capital alone, not capital and labor. That's a supply-side utopia (infinite productivity) and a demand-side catastrophe (who buys the stuff if nobody earns wages?).

For investors, this creates an asymmetry: capital-intensive industries benefit. Labor-intensive industries don't have an escape valve. The traditional model — "displaced workers retrain and find new jobs in new industries" — may not hold this time. Not because the workers can't retrain, but because the new industries don't need them.

Where Human Labor Has a Moat

Not everything gets displaced. Acemoglu identifies three categories where human labor has a structural defense:

Shapiro describes our current moment as civilizational adolescence. The analogy is developmental psychology, scaled up.

When you're a child, your parents are the Masters of your world. All judgment, morality, purpose, and authority flow from them. Then you grow up and realize they're flawed, absent, sometimes wrong. That realization triggers adolescent resentment — a necessary developmental stage that eventually leads to adult independence.

Humanity is doing the same thing at civilizational scale. For millennia, we derived purpose from God, or Society, or the Market. Now we're realizing those frameworks can't give us what we need in an AI world. The current doom/nihilism about AI is the temper tantrum phase. Postnihilism — accepting that we're our own moral and economic principals — is the early adulthood that comes after.

Each new technology is a forcing function for maturity. Nuclear weapons gave us the power to destroy ourselves. Genetic engineering gave us the power to redesign ourselves. AI gives us the power to make ourselves economically optional.

We have to grow up. And growing up is messy, emotional, and nonlinear.

For investors, the actionable insight is this: we are in the temper tantrum phase. Fear, nihilism, doom predictions, and regulatory overreaction are all symptoms of a civilization in adolescent resentment toward a technology that's forcing it to grow up. This phase passes. It always passes. And the investors who understood that it would pass — in 1440 with the printing press, in 1830 with the steam engine, in 1995 with the internet — were the ones who built generational wealth.
